It’s election time – let your voice be heard regarding
live animal exports.

WSPA Humane Chain website and help put live exports on the agenda in the media. Or go to the Animals Australia and let the major parties know that animal welfare is important to you. It only takes a few minutes!

In regards to local WA issues, we urge you to contact your Federal MP and let them know that animal welfare issues, specifically a phase out of live exports, is important to you. This is especially important if you live in the marginal seats of Hasluck, Cowan, Canning, Swan and Stirling. To find out who your candidates are, the ABC has an excellent website set up. If you aren’t sure which electorate you are in, go to the Australian Electoral Commission.

For an overview of the candidates in Fremantle see below:

Every year tens of thousands of sheep die on the ships before they reach the Middle East. In 2008 alone, over 35,000 sheep died on sea voyages. Hundreds of cattle die each year on the sea voyage, and more succumb to illness and disease after arrival.

The industry likes to use mortality rates as an indicator of animal welfare. 35,000 sheep equates to around 1% of animals dying on board, although many animal welfare agencies agree that this is not a good measure of animal welfare as many succumb to illness and disease after arrival.  Animals that die on board are generally not euthanised, but die due to failure to eat (stavation), stress and disease. Animals that survive the long stressful journeys are then subjected to further transportation, handling and slaughter methods that are frequently not acceptable and illegal in Australia.
