The industry likes to use mortality rates as an indicator of animal welfare. 35,000 sheep equates to around 1% of animals dying on board, although many animal welfare agencies agree that this is not a good measure of animal welfare as many succumb to illness and disease after arrival. Animals that die on board are generally not euthanised, but die due to failure to eat (stavation), stress and disease.
Animals that survive the long stressful journeys are then subjected to further transportation, handling and slaughter methods that are frequently not acceptable and illegal in Australia.
