The Australian government is looking to develop uniform standards on the transport of animals.
We now have a very important opportunity to comment on the draft standards. The draft standards have been drafted for the livestock industry and (virtually) by the livestock industry. It is now up to people like YOU to put forward a voice for the animals!
Please go to www.animalwelfarestandards.net.au to download a copy of the draft guidelines and find out how to put in your submission.
You have to get your submission in before 27 May. The draft standards are enormous so you please allow yourself sufficient time to prepare your submission.
In your submission you may like to comment on issues such as:
the draft standards require only that handlers be 'competent' and there is no requirement for formal training;
stocking density of various species;dragging sheep is not specifically prohibited in the draft standards;electric prodders are permissible in the draft standards;
proposed food & water deprivation times;proposed methods of euthanasia;the vague terms used in the draft standards mean that most of the standards seem to be weak and useless;
how will these standards be enforced (for example, in WA we currently have just 6 government inspectors to oversee the treatment of several million farm animals).If you find something else in the standards that you think that others might like to include in their submission, please send your comments to tradeban at pacat.org (you might need to register to tradeban first)
Good luck!
