Dear Advocates for Animal Welfare

You may be aware that the animal transport Code of Practice is open for public comments until 27th May 2008.

Before preparing your submissions you may like to look at the comments from Live Export Shame.

The transport of animals is one of the most stressful, activities forced onto animals.

The Codes of Practice, which are still currently used by states and Territories, are non enforceable and thus by and large useless. They serve only to set a minimum level at which the industry should operate.

The new CoP is called the 'Standards and Guidelines' and the Standards will be legally enforceable should the individual states endorse into legislation. The guidelines provide they way in which the industry will meet the Standards.

However, sadly the Standards have been written in such a way that most are unenforceable. They sound good. At first glance they look as though they are tough. Reality is; the wording is such that it provides a way in which those responsible can avoid prosecution should there be animal welfare problems. In effect animals can, and will suffer, and die, and no one will be held accountable.

If you agree with the alternate Standards from Live Export Shame please feel free to rely on them for your alternative submission. However we ask that you use your own words rather than copy word for word. This will have far more impact on the likelihood for change.

We will get only one chance at helping the millions of sheep, cattle, chickens, horses, goats, camels, buffalo and deer and, only if as many as possible submit their opinion.

Thank you

Live Export Shame

Apologies if you receive this mail more than once.
